AQUARIUM, 2000, mixed-media installation, 8:00 minutes

Upon entering the installation the viewer is forced to walk in front of the video projector allowing for interaction between the viewers’ silhouette and the projected image. The projected image is made up of underwater imagery. Moments vary in intensity as different figures enter into and out of the scene. The movements of the figures are similar: they enter from the left or right, walk towards the center (their backs facing the viewer), they pause, and then exit. The choreography is based upon human movement through a gallery or museum environment when viewing artwork. The viewers’ own silhouetted image mimics this pattern creating a virtual hall of mirrors. The side-walls are draped with a shiny white plastic and the lights from the projection lightly bounce off the walls. The projection wall has various bubble shapes rising out from the depths of the floor. Some of these hemispheres are mirrored and a closer look reveals the viewer within their own bubble.
